Adam Cole sets an NXT record by being the longest reigning NXT Champion for over 293 days. Finn Balor, a former NXT Champion, held the title for 292 consecutive days until he lost to Samoa Joe. On June 1st, 2019, NXT Takeover XXV in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Adam Cole defeated Johnny Gargano in 31 minutes and 45 seconds, to become the 16th titleholder in history and the second triple crown winner. The match was one of the most epic matches of all time.

The championship was first introduced on July 1st, 2012, during the episode of NXT when "the late" NXT Commissioner Dusty Rhodes announced a Gold Rush Tournament. Seth Rollins became the first NXT Champion. Samoa Joe and Shinsuke Nakamura are the only superstars to become a two-time champion.
