Smackdown Results and Reaction 05.22

05/23/2020

Braun Strowman defeated The Miz.

The Universal Champion outlasted The Must-See Wrestler by power-slamming his way to victory. And if you thought that "The Fiend" would make his presence, we were mistaken as John Morrison added a twist by offering a challenge to Stowman in a handicap match at Backlash for the Universal Title.

On the contrary to the reason for Morrison's offer, Strowman's record in handicap matches in WWE is 5 and 1. Meaning, he has five wins under his belt versus either 3:1 or 4:1. Strowman did lose to Cesaro, Sami Zayn, and Shinsuke Nakamura at the Elimination Chamber 2020 that awarded Zayn as the titleholder.

I do not see Strowman losing the title when he has a future match setup with "The Fiend." That was an indicator from The Miz's rant at Strowman. But if Miz & Morrison could pull it off, would Otis cash in his briefcase and embarrass the tag team once again?

Intercontinental Championship Tournament Semifinals are set.

AJ Styles and Jeff Hardy defeated their opponents to advance to the semifinals. It is intriguing to know that AJ Styles is officially on Smackdown. Michael Cole announced that he was traded. There is no answer as to which Superstar from Smackdown went to RAW. WWE has only moved Styles' status for Smackdown. This can be a game-changer has most believed AJ Styles was there temporarily.

Bayley defeated Charlotte Flair.

Bayley found a way to get the best from Flair. She scored the win with a rollup, holding the ropes for added leverage to get a three count. Technically, the match proved that Bayley is a skilled athlete, and she did not need Sasha Banks to win. On the other hand, she cheated her way to demonstrate to everyone that she is not the old character to show off as a role model. Bayley will do anything to remain champion.

For Flair, did her inspirational, motivational chat create a turning point for Sasha Banks to snap out of being a substandard superstar and get back to being the Boss?

I believe Bayley sensed the change and doubt that she wanted Banks to remain backstage during the match. Still, I think Bayley and Banks will be an epic match set for Summerslam. What are your thoughts?

Dolph Ziggler and Sonya Deville defeated Otis and Mandy Rose.

Deville executed a big running knee to the back of Rose's head and pinned her for the win. The match could have been better for a women's singles match than having a mixed tag team. Rose and Deville had more in-ring action than Ziggler and Otis. This feud is far from over as we can see two matches added to the midcard for Backlash.
