What will be the outcome of BYU & Coastal Carolina
The College Football Selection Committee made it clear for teams outside the power five conference that having a weak schedule will not allow you to reach the top 10 rankings. With Liberty unable to compete because of COVID-19, BYU jumped on an opportunity to challenge Coastal Carolina (CC) to place themselves as contenders. However, the results may not be what BYU Athletic Director Tom Homoe wanted for the team.
The NO. 18 Coastal Carolina football team knocked off No. 13 BYU 22-17 Saturday night. The Chanticleers remained unbeaten (10-0) and handed the Cougars their first loss of the season (9-1).
Just before the half ended, Both teams were in a brawl. BYU Quarterback Zach Wilson threw a Hail Mary attempt in the final seconds of the first half only to be intercepted. Wilson took some shots from CC defensive players that sparked a bench-clearing brawl. No flags were thrown.
CC QB Grayson McCall managed the game going 10/15 85 Yards passing and 12 rushing attempts 68 rushing yards. CJ Marable rushed for 132 yards with two touchdowns and Reese White rushed 12 times with 53 yards, one touchdown. CC was most effective with their ground game as they racked up 281 yards. The defense applied pressure on Zach Wilson throughout the game.
In the end, with 55 seconds left on the clock, Wilson drove the team starting at BYU 18 yard-line. It was 1st down & 10, 7 seconds left; Wilson completed a pass to Dax Milne but was stopped at the one-yard line as time expired.
Coastal Carolina will travel to Troy next week for their final game of the regular season. Then, they will have a rematch with the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns for the Sun Belt Conference Championship.
BYU will host San Diego State next week for their final regular-season game.
What happens next? For BYU, they will fall down the rankings and may do so hard. Despite the competitiveness of the game, the committee will still observe BYU as having a weak schedule. As for Coastal Carolina, they adjusted to the short notice of the game and won. Down by one point at the half, they showed resilience and put away their opponent. How far will they move up?
The Chanticleers defeated two top 25 teams (BYU and Louisiana). They beat a Big12 team Kansas while Louisiana defeated Iowa State. If you are using the eye test, The Sun Belt Conference pushed over a Power Conference. Coastal Carolina deserves to be in the top 10. So much respect should go to the entire conference.
